"Edwin Pickard's account of the battle of the Little Bighorn first appeared in the 'Oregon Sunday Journal,' January 14, 1912. Pickard gave a second account of the battle to reporter Fred Lockley in 1923 and the story ran in the Portland Journal newspaper in five installments beginning July 31 of that year. It was later reprinted in the 1954 summer 'Montana Heritage Series' No.7; Montana Historical Society Press under the title 'I rode with Custer' and edited by Dr. Edgar I. Stewart"--P. 2.
